NZ HISTORICAL CERAMIC DATABASE

This database is a research tool for archaeologists (and others) interested in ceramics recovered from sites in New Zealand. Such items are useful for researchers for dating sites and identifying those potteries supplying the colonies during Victorian era.

The information gathered here is designed to bridge a gap between the wealth of documentation available on British potteries (and particularly the Staffordshire potteries) and the difficulties of archaeological identification of the ceramics. The focus is therefore on the following:

  • Images of patterns
  • Makers marks and Manufacturers
  • Dating information
  • Standardisation of recording of unknown patterns.

While every attempt is made to ensure (and constantly improve) the accuracy of the information provided here, no responsibility is accepted regarding the use of the information contained in the website. For academics the original source material is always the preferred option.
