| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: Albion was a pattern title that was used on at least four different designs produced during the 19th century (Coysh and Henrywood 1984: 18). The examples of this pattern that are commonly recovered from historic sites represent one design that is similar to the Albion pattern attributable to manufacturer Robert Maling (Macready and Goodwyn 1990: 12). To date however, the majority of examples retrieved from historic sites which do have manufacturing marks, including four examples from His Majesty?s Theatre and those examples from both the Victoria Hotel and Fort Ligar, all carry the manufacturing mark of Lewis Woolf. A further two examples from the Victoria Hotel and the Auckland Gaol carry the currently unidentified manufacturing mark ?S. & H. W? (Figure 3.8; see also Macready and Goodwyn 1990: 12, Fig. 2 C3, Brassey and Macready 1994: 40, 52 Fig. 21 C3, 60 Fig. 29f). |
