This design title undoubtedly refers to the palace of the same name located in Granada Spain. Built during the 13th and 14th centuries for the Moorish Kings, Alhambra is renowned primarily for its elaborate ornamentation. ?Alhambra? is recorded in Coysh and Henrywood (1984:18) as a flown blue Moorish design produced by John Thomson & Sons. To date, all of the recorded examples of this pattern recovered from Auckland?s historic sites are purple/mauve in colour (see Macready and Goodwyn 1990:15, Fig. 6 C21). |
