Description:
| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: Rhine is a pattern title that was given to several designs during the 19th century (Coysh and Henrywood 1984: 300-301). The examples of Rhine commonly found at historic sites all appear to be the same design, which includes the characteristic Rhine border pattern but with some instances of minor variation in the central river scene (Macready and Goodwyn 1990: 11; see Brassey and Macready 1994: 52, Fig. 21, C5). Despite the widespread distribution of this pattern within historic sites and the frequent occurrence of Rhine pattern marks, these vessels rarely carry manufacturing marks. The only recorded instance of a manufacturing mark on a Rhine vessel appears to be from Clovernook House where one Rhine vessel carried a Davenport mark. |
