| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: No reference to a design with this title and a description that characterises this pattern was found in Coysh and Henrywood (1984). The title of this blue transfer-printed design was identified by a pettern mark consisting of the pattern name "QUEEN" enclosed within the standard 'Royal Garter' motif (consisting of a circular strap or 'garter' and buckle). This particular motif was very popular with the Staffordshire potteries during the second half of the 19th century and may represent any number of firms who are known to have used it at one time or another. This "Queen" pattern has been previously recorded (but unidentified) in the Chancery Road assemblage and is listed in the D.O.C. reference collection as pattern number EA 463. There is another pattern recorded in the D.O.C. reference collection with the title "Queen", which also utilises the royal garter motif but is distinct from the one recorded here. |
