| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: Medina, a city in Hejaz province of West Saudi Arabia is the second most holy city of Islam (after Mecca) that houses the tomb of Mohammed in the main mosque. Coysh and Henrywood (1984:243) List four manufacturers that produced designs with this title. These include; Dixon, Austin & Co., Charles Meigh, Son and Pankhurst, Jacob Furnival & Co. and Thomas Godwin. To date however, the two recorded examples of this pattern from His Majesty?s Theatre and Miner?s Bay carry the initials ?W.R? of manufacturer William Ridgway. Although the design series attributed to Thomas Godwin which is described in Coysh and Henrywood (1984) as a series of romantic views incorporating tents, minarets and persons in Arab costume generally fits the description of the known examples, the illustrated example is quite different (Figure 3.10; see also Coysh and Henrywood 1984:243) |
