| Technique: Transfer-print | Archaeological Notes: This pattern previously recorded, but unidentified is listed in the D.O.C reference collection as E.A.342. Davenport is the only recorded manufacturer of this design, which comprises one of a series of romantic landscape scenes set within a border of scrolls and flowers. The central scenes usually feature the same figures, including a muleteer, two women and a child set within a scene that depicts a Gothic tower and a village beside a lake. The various scenes were based on Thomas Morton?s play The Muleteer of Toledo, that was popular during the mid 19th century (Coysh and Henrywood 1989:141). However, this design is known to have been produced earlier than this. An example of this design that is illustrated in Godden (1974) carries an impressed mark ?Davenport? with an anchor and year number ?35? for 1835 (Godden 1974: colour plate v). |
