POTTERIES

Over 1500 potteries are known to have operated in the Staffordshire district alone. This database does not attempt a comprehensive description of these potteries but concentrates on those identified on ceramics in New Zealand historic sites. Description: Kirkcaldy Pottery, Fifeshire, Scotland; 1800-1850 (Godden 1964:453), or 1875-1930 (Godden 1968:146). This manufacturer was represented by two different manufacturing marks. The first included eighteen examples on Willow pattern plates (Figure 3.7). This particular D. Methven manufacturing mark has also been previously recorded on Willow pattern vessels at the Victoria Hotel, the Auckland Gaol site and Sky Tower (see Brassey and Macready 1994:60, fig. 29c; Best 1992:21, plate 23a; Young 1995:81). The second mark occurred on a purple transfer-printed saucer: pattern 150 (Appendix 2).Source: Godden (1991:433 2653)
