POTTERIES

Over 1500 potteries are known to have operated in the Staffordshire district alone. This database does not attempt a comprehensive description of these potteries but concentrates on those identified on ceramics in New Zealand historic sites. You can view information on individual potters and their marks on the posttery.

W.T. Copeland & Sons Ltd

Country: Date Range:
Description: Spode Works, Stoke, Staffordshire; 1847- present (Godden 1968:56). Eight transfer-printed ?Copeland Late Spode? marks attributable to this manufacturer were recovered. Although Copeland and Garrett 1833-47 also incorporated the firm?s original proprietor?s name ?late Spode? in their marks, the absence of ?Garrett? in these manufacturing marks suggest that they post date this partnership. In addition, all of the marks recovered include pattern registration marks that date to the period when W.T. Copeland and Sons operated the pottery between 1847-67. Four of these marks occurred on two flown blue cups, and two flown blue saucers (pattern number 1). All four of these examples included a registration mark of June 1852. The four remaining marks include; a blue pattern 110/ ?Honeysuckle? bowl with a registration date of 7 April 1855, a flown blue saucer with a partial registration date of 1848 (pattern number 24), a plain ware plate and a dark blue saucer with a registration date of 17 August 1849 (D.O.C pattern E.A.201) (Figure 3.21). This last pattern and registration mark are also recorded at Chancery Street.Source:
