A number of chronologies or part chronologies exist for the Georges Street Avondale brickworks originally started by William Hunt in 1881/2, and these do not agree (see Lambert 1985:141, Eaves 1990:9, J.Diamond pers.comm). A number of the bricks recovered from the His Majesty's site are thought to have come from these brickworks, and an attempt was made to establish a more reliable sequence. For this the relevant title deeds and trade directories were consulted.

From the above it can be seen that GLENBURN marked bricks were apparently made between 1923 and c.1929, the latter date being when the Amalgamated Brick and Pipe Co. Ltd was formed. Bricks marked J J CRAIG are most likely to have been made between 1896 and 1900, although it is possible that they were produced again when Craig bought out Avondale Brick and Pottery. The legal changes between 1901 and 1922, as shown by the deeds information, are not reflected in the Trade Directory, and this remains unresolved. | |
