Austin family had long involvement in local companies specializing in the production and sale of bricks. Bricks branded A & K were made prior to 1888 by a partnership formed by John and William Austin and Henry B Kirk. Henry Kirk has worked by himself prior to the partnership in Lyttelton and after the partnership dissolved he started at the Farnley works at Huntsbury which later was owned by and became the Murphy Bros works. |

Fire brick, Austin Sydenham Frog |
Pale orange fire brick with shallow round corner rectangular depression frog with indented words "Austin Sydenham" with indented circles on each side from the making mould. Made by John and William Austin circa 1880 - 1890. |
Austin family had long involvement in local companies specializing in the production and sale of bricks. In the 1880s machine pressed bricks appeared with brand names rather than initials as previously. Some makers incorporated the district or origin of the brick to ensure positive identification. |
