Brick, Brunner B Frog |
Very pale orange (white) brick with rectangular indent with angled sides and indented text "Brunner B" bricks, dull red, grey, white. Made in the grey Valley |
Can come in several colours including dull red, grey, white. Coal was first found in the Grey Valley by the explorer Thomas Brunner in January 1848 on an epic journey with Maori companions exploring the source of the Buller River and places to the south. He was away from his Nelson starting point 585 days. In 1876 a suspension bridge and brick works was built along with coke ovens. The Brick comes from the site of New Zealand's worst mining disaster where 67 men and boys were killed in a mine explosion. The site of the mine, coke works and brickworks is now a protected heritage site. The bricks were used in the coke ovens on the site and well as sent around especially the South Island. |

Joseph Libeau came to Akaroa in 1840 on the Compte de Paris from Bordeaux, France and was probably Canterbury's first brick maker. The Douglas Brick Kiln located in Stratford/Taranaki is classified with the Historic Places Trust. It closed in 1981 after 60 years of production turning local clay firstly into bricks and then later into tiles. Its once proud, 33m (100ft) high chimney over the kiln was demolished in 1985 for safety reasons. At its peak it produced 300 000 feet of tiles in one year. It was founded in 1920 and closed 60 years later, at that time one of the few brickworks left in New Zealand. |

Brick, Ford & Ogden |
Dark red glazed brick with chocolate-bar pattern on reverse and rectangular indented frog with angled sides and raised lettering; Ford & Ogden on top side. |
The pottery at South Malvern was established by amateur geologist Edmund Ford and [?] Ogden in 1879, and within 10 years had become quite substantial. Thomas Condliffe (brother of Alfred, at the Springfield pottery) became manager there in 1886. The works were sold to C W Fisher & Co in 1889, and were eventually bought out by the Wigram Brothers and closed down. Presumably they mainly made industrial-type wares (chimney pots, pipes etc) and their only known domestic wares were of a practical nature, eg. crocks and jars. |
